This photo, taken by William Hopkins in the Spring This photo, taken by William Hopkins in the Spring of 1923, shows the Columbus power plant, which provided hydroelectric power for hard rock mining operations near Alta. In 1903 the Columbus Consolidated Mining Company petitioned for the construction of the plant, asserting the electricity would be used "to operate electric lighting and power machinery for the (CCMC) mine, mill, tramway, etc..." Construction was completed in 1904 and the Columbus power plant ran for an estimated 20 years before its abandonment during the decline of mining in the Little Cottonwood Mining District. The ruins of the plant can still be seen today beside Little Cottonwood Creek.
