What is an avalanche?
An avalanche is a mass of snow moving down a slope. Avalanches occur throughout the Wasatch Mountains during the winter months. The combination of the Central Wasatch Mountains’ high snowfall amounts and steep terrain make the Cottonwood Canyons one of the most active avalanche areas in North America.
